Resizing Profile Pictures/Avatars

Resizing Profile Pictures/Avatars

The following instructions are meant for people not knowing how to resize pictures, but would like to use a profile picture (also called avatar). Before reading them, you may wish to use Google or any other searching machine to find free programs (e.g. Avatar Sizer) or online services (e.g. www.snipshot.com, www.imageeditor.net or www.myimager.com ) that can do the job for you at the click of a button.

Seeing as there are hundreds of picture editing programs out there, the following instructions are provided as a compromise and they refer to a program called “Paint”. Paint is a basic drawing and painting program, which is included in every Windows version. Provided that you have not changed your Windows start menu, you can find it under “Programs > Accessories”. Please note that the following instructions are solely meant as a “beginner guide” and do not cover more advanced techniques.

Resizing Pictures with Paint:

1) Open Paint.

2) Click on “File > Open” in the menu bar at the upper end of the screen.

3) After a window has opened, search the picture that you want to use as your profile picture/avatar, mark it and click the “Open” button.

4) Click on “Image > Stretch/Skew” in the menu bar at the upper end of the screen.

5) After the Stretch/Skew window has opened, you can resize the picture by changing the horizontal and vertical percentage values of stretch. After having adjusted the values of stretch, click on “Okay”.

6) In order to check the width and height of your picture, click on “Image > Attributes” from the menu bar at the upper end of the screen. Please bear in mind that a profile picture/avatar can have a maximum of 80x80 pixels. Of course, you can use smaller pictures, but you cannot use pictures with more than 80x80 pixels. If the width and height of your picture are equal or lower than 80 pixels, than proceed with step 7. Otherwise, repeat step 5.

7) After having resized the picture to a maximum of 80x80 pixels, click on “File > Save As…”. Choose a name for your profile picture/avatar and select either “jpg”, “gif” or “png” as file format. Please keep in mind that other file formats are not allowed on IAG.

Since a profile picture/avatar can assume a maximum file size of 5kb on IAG, you should check its file size before trying to upload it. In case the file size is larger than 5kb, try saving it as another file format. In general, at least one of the three file formats should allow a file size lower or equal to 5kb.
