Will David Becks shine in America? Does he want to go there for the money or "I'm going for the life of course, for my kids to enjoy it and my wife to enjoy it, but the main thing for me is to improve the soccer and to improve the standard and to be part of history really." I don't think so.

He couldent give a fuck if the league fails or sucseeds if he wasent goin for the money why the fcuk dident come to the league of ireland exactly,

Anyway its beside the point fair play to him the way the a league is run not like in europe with playoffs an all so i rekon he will win things over there,

& he still a world class player in his own way id only imagine him and klose in the same team anyway.

You do relise that even if it is for the money its the first time hes been payed what hes worth, hes been underpaid at Real and United, he is simply worth gold in commerical aspects thats why hes getting this money.

ffs quit calling it SOCCER....it's football in the entire world, so plz call it that aswell

and btw, his glorydays are well over, an amazing footballplayer a couple of years ago, but not anymore

and excuse me, underpaid in real and united? in 2005 he still earned 47,500 pounds a day... you call that underpaid?
Image

Beckam's game was all about fitness, leg work and crossing. Although his legs have gone and he's lost some of that awesome fitness he can still produce match winning crosses every now and then.

He could have offered many premiership teams something extra and it's a shame that he isn't finishing his career in a highly competitive and recognised league. A league that he helped establish as possibly the best in the world.

It's a shame that Beckam is effectively retiring by playing in such an unrecognized league so early in his career. It seems that he's also given up in his quest to be re picked for the England squad and has seeminly accepted Mcclarens doubts about him.

Beckham will be missed from European football but if he can help spread the word about football to those ignorant yanks then it can't all be bad. Anyway, who in their right mind would turn down 75K a day in the twilight of their career when you've got a family to support.?!

One thing though Beckham, if I hear you call the beautiful game soccer again I'll hunt you down lad :)

I suspect there was some subtle whispering in his ear about the opportunities on offer in LA LA land. His bony-backsided missus is looking to restart her "career", isn't she??
They'll fit in nicely over in 2D town.

On the other hand, it might actually raise the profile of football in the US, and they might start to see the benefit of joining the rest of the world.

I reckon he'll get on alright over there, whether it'll make the game any more popular over there, I couldn't say.

why on earth would one player make a difference for a nationwide league
Image
submitted by pwilliamson 667 days 3 hrs 51 mins ago
Because that one player is the most famous sportsman on the planet. It will boost the profile of us football.

And the fact that the US is shaped and led by the cult of personality should give Becks, who expends just as much effort on his appearance as his footy, an advantage over someone who is a total footballer (remember Cruyf?).

In terms of actual football, I think he will find himself matched by the local talent, but IMO that's not what this move is about.

Im not a beckam fan, but hey good bloody luck to the guy, whether its football or money, and apart from the odd shag behind posh,s back, he has been good for football, id rather my kids followed his way than been a , Gazza, or G best drunk,

Unless the game had been played with rolling subs, and you can bring him on for freekicks and corners, I have never really rated the guy.

What will he bring to the US game? Well right now, how many of us bump into MLS on TV 'by accident'? Pretty much none, unless we happen to have a great drinkin session mid-week and pop on channel 5 for a laugh. Cast you minds back to his move to Real. A/ Sky bought and played EVERY Real game, at great profit and profile benefit to Real and the Spanish league, and B/ Loadsa my missus mates suddenly went out and bought the ol' white shirt with his name on the back. On top of that, the leagues 1st major stars were Carlos Valder-haircut, Alexi 'beard tripper' Lalas, and Preki (signed by Everton early 90's as the greatest indoor football player in the world). Not slating the standards of US football as it has excelled itself to reach top 10 in world rankings, but this will probably take it to another level, and credit due to the lunatic who bankrolled it.

Just can't wait to see Snob Spice on Jerry Springer myself. 'My husband slept with the Ohlsen twins, and paid for their boob jobs'.

hopefully all these now former EPL players can get the rest of the league to up the tempo a bit... i get tired of watching MLS players walk around on the field.

he will definitely shine, as he will be clearly better than most playing in America, but i don't think he has gone there to help soccer in America.

Apparently Dec from the Geordie duo Ant & Dec is being offered a trial for the Galaxy after impressing in some charity match or something! How crackers is that! What next, Jeremy Clarkson in goal? Maybe Frank Bruno as centre-half to provide a bit of muscle. If true, does this smell like further media circussquad building to anyone?

if Becks helps promote the sport here that will be great. i just wished i lived closer to LA to see Chelsea when they come over. i know when i get the chance i'm going to drive the hour up to Columbus to finally get to see him play in person and Juan Pablo Angel. i finally get a chance to see people that i reckonize playing over here besides guys from the US National team. hopefully MLS will get better and get rid of the stupid salary cap that they have. i'm still pissed about Brently taking the 2nd team to Copa America, if he wanted them to get experience then play them in friendlies and lesser teams in CONCACAF.

He should do well but he aint gonna turn the Galaxy into a championship winning side, unless good players flock to join him. Though it certainly generates big interest there.

LA Galaxy as it is before Beckham were a top MLS Team. He will improve them dramatically, and I know almost 1 million a week, but soccer here in the US needs to improve DRAMATICALLY to make this a Europe-type league. Plus who wouldn't want to stay in Spain and play in the top tier the next 2 or 3 years. This is huge for the US.

i think becks will be a relative sucess. in comparison to the other players in the MLS. as i doubt the quality of league where juan pablo angel is banging them in :P

i just laugh at the guy that said beckham was underpaid ... the money he got from united and real was unbelieveable let alone the pepsi adverts and the gillette mach 3 ... which got him more millions. The 5 year contractat LA Galaxy is going to get him 250 million dollars from wages alone ... and for him being 'past it' there aint a chance, ee will be able to produce great crosses ad provide build up pay fo some years to come .. he just needs to get rid of his ankle injury and get som playing time .. he should bring some major publicity to the MLS and then maybe teach those americans that its FOOTBALL!!! not soccer!
